Introduction

First, Linux FreeS/WAN comes as a tar file containing source, documentation, patches etc. for Linux systems with 2.0.3X, 2.2.1X and 2.4.X kernels. If you want/need IPSEC and/or IKE for some other platform see the above link for the "IPSEC Community".

Next you should decide if you'r looking for something stable (like a big old Detroit car) or something on the cutting edge (like say an experimental jet fighter). If you want the car then you want to get the stuff below labeled "Latest Release", if you want the parts to what may be a jet plane go for "Today's Snapshot".

Latest Release

The current release of Linux FreeS/WAN as of 2001/06/19 is 1.91 and can be downloaded via:

FTP from Europe:     ftp.xs4all.nl     Grab all the "freeswan-*" files.

The difference betwen a Release and a Snapshot is that a release is tested to at least install in the target environment (currently RedHat-5.2 with 2.0.38 kernel or RedHat-6.2 with 2.2.19, or RedHat-7.0/7.1 with 2.2.19 or 2.4.5) according the the INSTALL and other documentation. There is no warranty of any kind with this software. For what a snapshot is see below.

We currently have only a couple of 'official' mirrors set up, if you would like to run a mirror of just the FTP directory or of the whole web site please contact us via the Design email list (see: "Maillist & Archives" above).

Todays Snapshot

WARNING: Snapshots are Experimental, they are just the current state of the multi-developer shared development tree and could be in any state of disarray. It might not compile, if it compiles then it might not work (and that can be REAL hard to tell with crypto software...) and the resulting binaries might even give your dog hiccups!

So please use the snapshot only if you judge yourself able to deal with any of the problems that might occur with unfinished software. That said, please do try the daily snapshot!

FTP from Europe:     snapshot.tar.gz

Please do go read up on how to submit a bug report, or even how to browse the bugs database before you submit a bug on a snapshot.

Signatures

In the future all binaries will be signed... For now we have to deal with this by hand. You will want to test your downloaded tar file with this pgp2 public key.
